An Overview of JMC 2033

JMC 2033, Writing for Mass Media, is an essential course for students interested in any major in the Gaylord College of Journalism. Whether the desired major is journalism, professional writing, public relations, advertising, or broadcasting. JMC 2033 is the starting course that teaches students skills to help lead to a successful career and degree completion. The course is designed to teach students a variety of skills relating to mass media and media outlets.

JMC 2033 is a preparation course for a professional career as well as a practice ground for students to develop and identify skills. Being a journalism course, a strong focus is placed on things like improving writing skills and learning to write specifically for mass media, which varies greatly from academic writing. It's also a class about creating effective communications and presenting messages using words. Grammar and the ability to gather information is another ability that will be introduced and practiced.

The course is made up of a lecture and lab. The lecture will focus on understanding and introducing general information about mass media, communicating, creating messages, specific techniques, and the values of your profession. Keep in mind that every student in the Gaylord College of Journalism is required to take this course. Because of this, the lecture is packed with information for each area of study. One lecture will focus specifically on writing for public relations and the various styles involved and the next lecture will be solely dedicated to learning techniques related to broadcasting.

Lecture is where ideas are introduced and lab is the place in which you put the learned information into practice. Lab is where the major work is done. While lab is a great time to practice and start assignments, a lot of time will need to be invested outside of class as well. The class size in lab is much smaller than lecture so the lab instructor is more readily available to help students, which is very beneficial to the student. Utilize their help and your time wisely to be successful in this course.
